I ordered the black. I don't use the balls at all to hold the pages. There is a bottom piece that holds the book open. This is great for a regular recipe book or a binder you keep your recipes in like I do. My book is over 4 inches thick so it will hold a large size recipe book. You will need to have some counter space to put this in. It tilts back enough that I don't have to use the balls to keep the pages open. I love it!!
