How to Measure Your Mattress for a Comforter

Tape Measure
Dimensions
Width is the measurement from left to right across the top of the mattress.
Length is the measurement across the top of the mattress from the head to the foot.
Depth is the measurement of thickness from the highest point on the top edge of the mattress to the bottom edge.
Directions
To start, measure the width and length of your mattress.
Next, determine the depth of your mattress only.
Add the depth to the width twice.
Add at least 4 inches to the width to allow for additional comforter overhang. Mattress width + mattress depth + mattress depth + 4" for overhang = comforter width
Add the depth to the length just once.
Add at least 2 inches to the length to allow for additional comforter overhang. Mattress length + mattress depth + 2" for overhang = comforter length
Compare your new dimensions to the bedding sizes.
Hint!
2 inches of overhang is the very least you should have!
Longer overhangs are acceptable depending on how far you want your comforter to hang.
Example
You measure your mattress as 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.
Next, you measure your mattress depth as 10 inches.
You would choose a bed covering that measures at least 84"Wx92"L to adequately cover your mattress.
Pillows with shams are usually placed on top of the comforter rather than tucked underneath.
