Which Bedskirt Size Do You Need?

A bedskirt covers your box spring and completes the look of a comforter, quilt, coverlet, or duvet cover. Have a bedspread that's on the short side? Just use a bedskirt to lengthen the look of your bed ensemble overall.

Before you decide on a style, however, it's best to make sure you're choosing the right size and "drop". Learn how to measure for a bedskirt in three simple steps; all you really need is a tape measure and the mattress sizes below.

How to Measure Your Mattress for a Bedskirt

Tape Measure

  • Width is the measurement from left to right across the top of the mattress.
  • Length is the measurement across the top of the mattress from the head to the foot.
  • Bedskirt drop is the measurement from the top of the box spring to the floor.

  1. Consult the mattress dimensions chart. Your box spring should be the same length and width as the mattress on top.
  2. Next, determine the depth of your mattress only.
  3. Based on the dimensions, select the mattress size that corresponds to your box spring.
(Measure the width and length of the mattress, if you are unsure.)
  4. Next, measure the bedskirt drop from the top of the box spring to the floor.
  5. Using the mattress size and bedskirt drop, choose the bedskirt that best fits your needs.

Length, Width, and Depth of a Mattress

  1. You consult the mattress sizes list. You determine that your box spring goes with a Queen size mattress.
  2. Next, you measure the bedskirt drop as 18".
  3. You would choose a Queen size bedskirt with an 18" drop.
