How to Replace a Toilet Seat

Ready to make the switch to a decorative toilet seat and lid? You'll want to make sure you take the correct toilet measurements, whether your model is a standard round or an elongated size. Learn how by following along with the videos below, plus find out how to install a toilet seat perfectly the first time around!

A good starting point is to determine whether you own a round or elongated toilet. Round bowls tend to measure 16-17 inches in length, while elongated sizes are typically 18-19 inches long (although they can also be 17 inches in length.)

Measuring and Installing a Standard Toilet Seat

Materials

  • Tape Measure
  • 2 Plastic Washers (Included)
  • 2 Plastic Nuts (Included)
  • 1 Standard Toilet Seat

Directions

  1. Start by measuring lengthwise from the front center rim of the toilet bowl to the midpoint between the bolt holes.
    A round bowl should measure 16 to 17 inches in length.
  2. Select a standard round toilet seat for your round bowl.
  3. Position the toilet seat over the bowl.
  4. Twist the plastic washers off the mounting bolts attached to the back of the seat.
  5. Place a washer over each bolt hole; insert the mounting bolts into the holes.
  6. Reach beneath the toilet bowl and gently twist a plastic nut onto each mounting bolt.
  7. Your toilet seat is now attached.

Materials

  • Tape Measure
  • 2 Plastic Washers (Included)
  • 2 Plastic Nuts (Included)
  • 1 Elongated Toilet Seat

Directions
