How to Wash a Comforter

Washable Comforter

Want to keep your comforter looking brand new but not even sure how to begin washing it? For starters, check the care label on your comforter to determine whether it's machine washable or dry clean only. Generally, you can also check the product page for laundering instructions. Touch of Class lists this information under the "Details" tab for your comforter.

Before You Get Started

  • Check the manufacturer’s instructions first before attempting to launder the comforter.
  • Get the comforter professionally laundered, if at all possible.

Dry Clean

Directions
Comforter should be taken to a certified dry cleaning service to be cleaned.

Machine Wash

Directions

  1. Take the comforter to a commercial laundromat with a large-capacity, front-loading washer and dryer. Make sure the washing machine does not have a center agitator.
  2. Place a pair of clean, white tennis shoes into the washing machine with the comforter to keep the fiber fill from getting matted.
  3. Launder the comforter using cold water and very little detergent on a delicate cycle. Do not use bleach.
  4. Tumble-dry the comforter in a commercial dryer on low heat with the tennis shoes, dryer balls, or clean tennis balls (again, to make sure the fill stays evenly-distributed).
  5. Check and fluff the comforter every thirty minutes to protect the fill.
  6. Hang the comforter on a clothesline or indoors to finish drying completely.

How to Remove Wrinkles from a Comforter

Garden Images III Comforter

A little wrinkling is normal when a comforter first comes out of its package. Wrinkles should relax out of the comforter after it has been on the bed for a few days. If all else fails, try these tips.

Before You Get Started:

  • Check the manufacturer’s instructions first before attempting to launder the comforter.
  • Refrain from putting dry clean only comforters in the dryer.
  • Get the comforter professionally laundered, if at all possible.

The Dryer Method (Machine Wash Only)

Directions

  1. Place the comforter in a large-capacity commercial dryer with a damp washcloth.
  2. Add two dryer balls (or clean tennis balls or clean, white tennis shoes). Any one of these items will help keep the fill inside the comforter from getting matted.
  3. Tumble-dry these items on low heat. Allow the comforter to dry completely on a flat surface, smoothing out any leftover wrinkles with your hands.

The Spray Bottle Method (Machine Wash Only)

Directions

  1. Place the comforter on the bed or hang it from a clothesline.
  2. Fill a spray bottle with water.
  3. Grip the edges of the comforter and lightly pull the fabric outwards.
  4. Spray the tightened fabric with water. The wrinkles should relax out.

Why Not Clean at Home?

  • Home-use washing machines may not be large enough for comforters. If the comforter is too big for the washing machine, it could damage the motor.
  • Home-use dryers may not be large enough for comforters. The fill may not distribute properly and could even warp.
