Which Bedspread Size Do You Need?

Bedspreads are meant to skim the bedroom floor, but do you find they often come up short? If so, you might not be choosing a large enough size. Today's mattresses may be thick and luxurious, but all that extra depth can really add up, making it so you need more and more fabric to ensure full coverage.

If you find yourself facing this problem time and time again, take a look at some of our extra long bedspreads. But first, you'll want to measure your mattress for the optimal fit.

How to Measure Your Mattress for a Bedspread

Materials

Tape Measure

Dimensions

  • Width is the measurement from left to right across the top of the mattress.
  • Length is the measurement across the top of the mattress from the head to the foot.
  • Depth is the measurement of thickness from the top of the mattress to the floor
(shortened to "bed drop" in instructions below)

Directions

  1. To start, measure the width and length of your mattress.
  2. Next, determine the drop from the top of the mattress to the floor.
  3. Add the drop to the width twice.
Mattress width + bed drop + bed drop = bedspread width
  4. Add the drop to the length just once.
  5. Add sixteen inches to the length to allow for a pillow tuck near the headboard.
Mattress length + bed drop + 16" for pillow tuck = bedspread length

Length, Width, and Drop of a Mattress

Example

  1. You measure your mattress as 60 inches wide by 80 inches long.
  2. Next, you measure the bed drop as 21 inches.
  3. 60"W + 21" drop + 21" drop = 102"W
  4. 80"L + 21" drop + 16" for pillow tuck = 117"L
You would choose a bed covering measuring 102"Wx117"L.
You can use a bedskirt with a bedspread if the length of the covering is not long enough to reach the floor.

Measure Mattress from Top to Floor

A simple measurement will determine which length is the best fit for your bed. Measure your bed at the corner, from the top of the mattress to the floor. Then select the bedspread drop length above that is closest to your measurement. Remember, a bedspread is meant to skim your bedroom floor and hide the underside of your bed. Take your bedspread measurements carefully!
